ISLAMABAD: The Muttahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party, two allies of the PPP government, clashed in the National Assembly on Tuesday on the issue of creating new provinces.
MQM’s deputy parliamentary leader Haider Abbas Rizvi wanted to discuss a resolution for the creation of the Hazara and Seraiki provinces but the ANP and PML-N members strongly opposed the move, calling it a non-issue. The already charged atmosphere got more tense when supporters and opponents of the move started sloganeering in the House. ANP Federal minister Ghulam Ahmed Bilour said it was a provincial matter and his party would not allow the division of Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa (KPK). Similarly, the Pakistan Muslim League (N) opposed the MQM move, saying they were trying to make an issue out of a non-issue. “The issue should be first discussed in the meeting of the House business advisory committee,” PML-N’s chief whip Sheikh Aftab said. He said his party fully supported the idea of new smaller provinces, adding that the Seraiki got fewer allocationsthan a single flyover project in Lahore. He said the National Assembly represented elected representatives from all the provinces and regions and all of them had a right to discuss their issues in the House.
