ABBOTTABAD: Four district nazims of Hazara Division Friday vowed to resist the move to rename NWFP as Pakhtunkhwa and demanded of the government to hold a referendum on the issue.
“The people of Hazara belt actively took part in the historic referendum in 1947 to make NWFP part of Pakistan, and they will resist the move to rename the province,” Sardar Haider Zaman, Nazim of Abbottabad district, told a press conference here.
Mansehra district Nazim Sardar Muhammad Yousaf and Kohistan district Nazim Dr Saifur Rehman, political activists of different political parties, nazims of union councils and a number of people from different walks of life were also present on the occasion.
Sources said Haripur district Nazim Yousaf Ayub Khan had sent his message, opposing the move to rename the province as Pakhtunkhwa. Haider Zaman said they would oppose the NWFP renaming at all cost and never accept the “un-constitutional step”, which he termed as a conspiracy against the sovereignty of the country.
The nazim further said that people of Dera Ismail Khan, Malakand and Kohat divisions were also against the move like the people of Hazara division.“The government must hold a referendum if it is keen on changing the name of the province,” he said and asked NWFP government to improve law and order instead of raising controversial issues.
Sardar Muhammad Yousaf termed the government’s decision to rename the province against the national interest as people of southern region of the province, Hazara and Malakand divisions, had openly been opposing it.
“It is the decision of one political party which had opposed the inclusion of NWFP in Pakistan during the referendum in 1947,” he added, without naming the Awami National Party. He said the people of Hazara had offered sacrifices for Pakistan and would never allow a handful of elements to play with integrity of the country. Later, the representatives of different political parties discussed at length the formation of a new regional political party with an aim to protect the interests of the Hazara people.

Hazara Nazims rail against NWFP renaming
Friday, February 20, 2009
By our correspondent
MANSEHRA: The district nazims of Mansehra, Abbottabad and Haripur Thursday demanded of the provincial government to address the core issues of militancy, lawlessness, unemployment and poverty in the province before its renaming.
“We are ready to accept ‘Pakhtunkhwa’ if it can resolve the major issues confronting the province. Through this step, the ANP-led government wants to run the NWFP affairs on ethnic and language basis,” said one of the speakers at the district council session here.
Following the regular session of Mansehra District Council, another session was also held to chalk out a joint strategy to block the provincial government’s move to rename the province. The session, held with Convener Attiqur Rehman Jahangery in the chair, was addressed by Abbottabad District Nazim Haider Zaman, Haripur District Naib Nazim Major (R) Safdar Zaman, Mansehra District Nazim Sardar Mohammad Yousaf. They said the province renaming was not the demand of the people, adding that they would not let the ANP rename NWFP. They said their forefathers had rendered sacrifices for the creation of Pakistan and that the ANP’s move might destabilise the country. “A meagre percentage of the NWFP people are in favour of the province renaming; they should respect the referendum of the pre-partition era and accept it as NWFP,” they maintained. They said Hazara was rich in natural resources and could be given the status of a separate province if the federal government renamed the NWFP as Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier, taking part in a debate on law and order and other agenda items, councillors Dr Siddique, Amjad Salar Khan, Malik Farooq, Maulana Waseeur Rehman, Ghulam Jan and lady councillors Parveen Saif and Riffat Hameed Qazi said police should maintain cordial relations with the local bodies’ representatives to curb the crime.
